BHP BILLINGTON more or less mines for everything so I wondered if I should begin to build a stake (expensive). But that is an aside. The continuing fall in USA house starts and their continuous fall in empoloyed (or increase in unemployed - not sure which has the greatest threatening tone) and the perceived slowing of the RISE in the economy of China and India - still racing in my view - is harming sentiment. I keep an eye on the FTSE which is still above 5,000. Oil is falling in price... 72.73 UK Crude for October. This is about 15% less than a few months ago. Everything points toward opportunity to mutter, 'Double dip.' I just do not see it. I am wrapped and entwined in the eventual ending of evil, and the recent economic bonfire of greed is at ember level, and the present situation is a flare up, not a huge arrival of more dry timber, if I can put it that way. A really hard winter in the north will throw oil into a huge and rapid rise. Read somewhere of 100 by mid-winter. I drink to that, and certainly think it could happen. Although the American debacle and the European follow-on; the banks mess in the UK; and the European follow on... all of these things are not over, but they are contained. If things are so bad, why is inflation on the up. But then that happened in the worst days of the 20s and 30s in Germany etc. Then came a war.. a huge war ... which boosted everything from death to radar. There is going to be a turn, and we could, at this time, be at the bottom. The bottom of the sea has an uneven surface, maybe we are bouncing along the bottom. But is it the bottom of bottoms or are we bouncing along towards a new chasm. Bugger it, I don't like the analogy.

Hope Against Hope

Tuesday 24th August (Associated with: http://www.shares-blog.com)

Hope against Hope: Again all Far East Indices down with the exception of Indonesia and CHINA. A military strike on Iran is so expected as not to be a Black Swan Event... except that the market will treat it as such and wallop down - but OIL will surge. That is in the background. North Korea might do something insane and disappear as a country if they do. But on the small scale I still fancy MATRA and MAX Pet, and I think we will soon see a rise in GAME. BP - either way. We wait. Meanwhile one of the big silly houses of an economic nature has suggested there is a 30% possibility of a double dip. Look that that expression - what in the name of God does it mean? Nothing! When they talk talking of 90% certainty then we can listen. There will be no double dip. The trend is up. Everything will rise. I often have punted on BP but it really is so uncertain I am staying out of it. I shall stick with RBS and LLOY
At the moment (07.55):
20 Bet on LLOY hoping for a rise, no stops

30 Bet on RBS hoping for a rise, no stops
10.00: Down £39, placed an extra 10 on LLOY @ 69.38 with a spread bet OCO (one cancels the other) to sell 10 @ 65 or 90. (Means loss limited to about £45 and gain to about £205 - nice if it happens). This is truer spread betting than I usually employ - strategic rather than tactical. I can over-ride it at any time.

Saturday update Shares-Blog

(Associated with: http://www.shares-blog.com/) - Go look!

Saturday update: In fact the Dow finished a trifling 16 down. Still looking at Oil shares as winners. BP's nasty well: some weasle comments about not quite right yet. Maybe the disaster was a prelude. Akeem is a delight, a kid who is a sponge nowhere near more than damp.

"How do you spell train?" thrown at him on the train.

He spells it correctly.

"How do you spell priority?"

Akeem must have had a sense of majestic opportunism because smack before his eyes on the seat in front of him was written on a plastic plaque: priority seat.

He spelt it correctly.

A discussion breaks out in which he describes the football tactics of a midfielder, which is he 'in the school team'.

"But really I'm a striker!" he declares.

"What's a striker?" I ask.

He looks at me with that quizzical but kindly expression of understanding that with age comes simplicity. People all around are listening in, smiling.

"I've never heard of that. Do you mean Centre Forward."

"A striker," came Akeem with an air of the great definer, "is a striker."

"Ah!" I say.

"But I'm a better goalkeeper," says Akeem as the doors of the carriage open.

Walking along the platform at London Bridge he says, "Where are we going now?"

"To catch a bus."

Akeem deviates to frighten a pigeon which was happily scuttling between many legs pecking at dust.

And ten minutes later we arrive at HMS Belfast, cruiser.

All is explained to him and he salutes the quarter deck on my direction with a look on his face of half embarrassment and half realisation that simplicity can develop into insanity.

We explore the byways and cabinways, and companionways and steep stairways.

"One hand for the ship and one for yourself," I advise. "But, since we are mere landlubbers, it is both hands for ourselves, use them both on the rails as we go up and down," I say hitting my head on the edge of an open stairway.

"Be careful," he says.

Coming down from 'B' turret deck, great 6" guns which fired on Germans, and the defenders at Normandy, in the Mediterranean and later off the shores of Korea, I lost him. Well, not exactly lost him it is just that we turned in opposite directions coming out of the turret, and I went down a stairway to the next deck outside... it was the only way down so I knew that he would come.

But after just 30 seconds I felt the keenest need to go back up after this wonderful child, out of sight. Then he reappeared with a marginal panic on his face, saw me, and patted his heart with relief.

"Scared?"

"Yes," he said. "'Till I saw you."

A huge sense of caring came over me.

After leaving, and an icecream which cost a lot and I did not let him pay with his £10 note given by his mother, we were on the high speed catamaran rushing towards Westminster, we in the stern overlooking the roaring froth from the twin props. He was looking at me.

He says, "Today is the best, best day of my whole holiday."

Kids can make hearts swell.<div
